Eugene Robert Sessions signed up for the navy at age 17 in 1942. He enlisted in the Navy as a apprentice seaman. The ship he was on was called the USS Tennessee. On February 17th 1945 when Eugene was 20 he and 5 other men on the ship were all awarded purple hearts the same day. Eugene Sessions was interviewed once in an article for a newspaper and he spoke his role on the ship. He said he was next to the guns and would removed the old shell and put the new shell in the gun. His nickname on the ship was “Deadshot.”
