This Christmas I made a Christmas ornament featuring the only photo ofLucinda Ivey Sessions and her daughter Patience Sessions. It’s just in time for Christmas and the Lumbee Nation’s federal recognition this year. The 575th federally recognized tribe. I hung pinecones from the bottom because the pinecone is a special symbol to the Lumbee people. They use the bottom of the pinecone on their seal, they use it in regalia, and jewelry . The pinecone reference comes from quilts made by Maggie Lowry Locklear (she was the daughter of Legendary Lumbee Henry Berry Lowry a robin hood like figure) in the late 1800s.
